Last night I decided to once and for all figure out how to Midi Sync Traktor and Kaossilator Pro. I had been reading all over the Internet about how to do it, and the general consensus is it’s just not possible.

Well. That’s simply not true.

It only took me 6 or 7 hours of playing around to figure it out, and it’s the simplest solution ever. I don’t know why nobody else has written this down for others, but here it is.

Notes:

I’m doing this using a Mac, with the latest Kaossilator Drivers, and the Latest Traktor 2 update. I did test with the 2.0.x series of Traktor and it also works, so this could be a workaround for everyone else experiencing midi sync issues with Traktor and the Kaossilator.

Requirements:

Traktor (2.0.1, 2.0.2, 2.0.3, or 2.2.x)

Kaossilator Pro plugged in via USB

Setup in Traktor:

0. Turn on the Kaossilator so Traktor will see it later.

1. Load up traktor and go to the preferences

2. Go to the controller manager screen.

3. Click on ‘Add‘

4. Add a ‘Generic Midi‘ device

5. Now click on ‘Edit‘

6. Go down to ‘Edit Comment‘

7. In the popup that appears, type in something that makes sense. I went with ‘Kaoss Midi‘

8. Now click ‘ok‘

9. Go to the ‘In-port‘ dropdown, and make sure ‘None‘ is selected

10. Go to the ‘Out-Port’ dropdown, and make sure ‘Kaossilator Pro‘ is selected

11. Go to the Midi Clock settings in the traktor configuration window

12. Make sure ‘Send Midi Clock‘ is checked to on

13. Now close the Traktor Configuration Window

14. Go to the Clock settings for traktor in the top left of Traktor

15. Make sure you turn on sync, and that ‘auto‘ is selected.

16. That’s it for Traktor

Kaossilator Setup:

1. Press the ‘Shift‘ button, and ‘Midi‘ at the same time (button 4)
2. The knob will display ‘FILTR‘ press down on the BPM selection button to select it
3. Scroll left or right until you see ‘CLOCK‘ and press the BPM button to select it
4. Change the Clock setting from ‘INT‘ to ‘AUTO‘
5. Hit the ‘write‘ button to save your changes.
6. You may want to save ‘ALL‘ your settings on the Kaossilator so they will be loaded again. Ask me in the comments or read your manual to learn how to do this.

That’s it, you’re done!

Now, when you play a track in traktor, you will see that if you press down on the BPM selection button on your Kaossilator Pro that the display says ‘EXT’ meaning it’s receiving it’s BPM from traktor directly.

You now have a synched Traktor and Kaossilator Pro. Have fun!!!

Today we had to fix a clients PHPlist. There was an error in their mysql select statement for whatever reason – whether it was their setup (they had some really weird group names and country names) or something with PHPList. Took us a while to figure it out, but as it turns out someone else had the same issue.

Basically the fix is this:

# nano /lists/admin/send_core.php

Find this

if (is_array($_POST["criteria_values"])) {
$values = join(“, “,$_POST["criteria_values"]);
} else {
$values = $_POST["criteria_values"];
}

and replace it with this

if (is_array($_POST["criteria_values"])) {
# The following code checks for null values in the criteria_attribute array and removes them
$values = $_POST["criteria_values"];
foreach ($values as $key=>$value) {
if (!$value) {
array_splice($values, $key, 1); // Remove null value from array
}
}
$values = join(“, “,$values);
# $values = join(“, “,$_POST["criteria_values"]);
} else {
$values = $_POST["criteria_values"];
}

Now everything should work, with no more mysql errors!

A buddy of mine helped to send a camera up this weekend in the Great Balloon Chase. Pretty neat stuff. They may have even beaten a world record, how cool is that.

From the Home Page

An excellent mission where almost everything went right! The prep, launch event, flight and chase could not have gone much better, especially given the weather. This was an excellent team effort.

We reached an altitude of at least 122,323′or 37.28km (not official yet, there are reports of a higher altitude). This surpassed a world record that stood for years before being broken by another group this past summer! To view the track of the balloon:

You can view the map on Google Maps.
Great work on this project guys. Love to see stuff like this.

I didn’t do this myself so I can’t vouch for it, but there was a recent discussion on one of the mailing lists I’m on about getting Sendmail to work with Rogers Smarthost settings.

Apparently this howto:

http://www.newthink.net/2007/05/18/smarthost-authentication-with-sendmail/

Will get you going, but there is one critical change you must make as determined by the Hugo on the mailing list.

Don’t forget to use smtp-rog.mail.yahoo.com in authinf and not smtp.broadband.rogers.com!

Also, if you want to use an external authinfo file, add this to your sendmail.mc file.

FEATURE(`authinfo’, `hash -o /etc/mail/authinfo.db’)dnl

Again, I didn’t try this myself, but I know some of you use Rogers and this may come in handy.

Another Reference on SMTP and Rogers Smarthost with Sendmail is here.

No thanks to Adobe, even after numerous complaints going all the way back to Creative Suite 1, if you have a bad font on your system, you may have issues saving as an .ai in Illustrator. You’ll get the dreaded “an unknown error has occured”.

If you disable PDF compatibility, it will save, but that’s not good enough!

You may also have a problem in Photoshop, where whenever you try and type on the canvas, it says an unknown error has occured in the font rendering engine or something to that effect. Again, similar error, stupid Adobe.

Turns out if you go to your fonts directory, hit CTRL-A to select all items, then go to the file menu, “copy fonts to” and select a folder on your desktop. Copy all the fonts to this folder, wait till it’s done.

Now go ahead and download a free trial of Font Agent for Windows. And let it analyze all your fonts. It will tell you which fonts are bad.

Go back to your windows font directory, delete the bad fonts. Restart Photoshop, or illustrator, and you should be able to save again.

This comes after probably 6 hours of trying different fixes with the transparancy settings, the font cache, font .lst files, adobe presets deleting, app setttings deleting, etc this is the only thing that fixed it.

Maybe it’d be nice if Adobe included a little “verify my fonts” checkbox and alerted us to bad fonts. That’d probably be too easy though.
